Eight departments, the way a superintendent names them: the equipment inside each one and the makers behind it. Click through for the intervals, the governing instruments and the full maker index.

Find your equipment

Search the item on your due list — EEBD, HRU, davits, cargo gear, SCBA, ODME — and you get what is due, the instrument that sets it, and the makes we service. The interval and the citation on every tile are the same text a regulatory reviewer checked; nothing here is paraphrased.

Sacrificial anode and hull potential survey
Class- or owner-set; taken at the bottom inspectionSOLAS Reg. I/10 sets the bottom-inspection cycle for cargo ships — a minimum of two inspections of the outside of the ship's bottom during the five-year period of validity of the certificate, with no more than 36 months between any two. SOLAS sets nothing for ICCP or anodes: that survey is class- or owner-ordered and is taken while the hull is accessible, which is why it follows the bottom-inspection window rather than a cycle of its own. Whether an in-water survey may stand in for a drydock bottom inspection is a matter for the Administration and class, not something Reg. I/10 provides for.

Emergency and escape-route lighting test
AnnualClass rules at the annual survey. Endurance is fixed by SOLAS Reg. II-1/43 for cargo ships — 3 hours at muster and embarkation stations and over the sides, 18 hours for alleyway, stairway, exit, machinery-space and control-station lighting — and by Reg. II-1/42 for passenger ships (36 hours, which the Administration may reduce to not less than 12 hours for ships regularly engaged on short voyages).
Low-location lighting examination and luminance test (passenger ships over 36 passengers)
Weekly visual; luminance test at least every 5 years (passenger ships)Passenger ships only. SOLAS Reg. II-2/13.3.2.5.1 requires the marking and refers its evaluation, testing and application to the FSS Code Ch. 11, which points in turn to IMO Res. A.752(18). Those guidelines apply to passenger ships carrying more than 36 passengers and are written as recommendations: §9.1 that all LLL systems be visually examined and checked at least once a week with a record kept, §9.2 that luminance be tested at least once every five years with readings taken on site. ISO 15370 carries the measurement method. Nothing here is set for a cargo ship.

How a UR Z17 approval works, and its limits

13
  • Approval is granted by one society, never by IACSIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 6.1: the individual society audits, certifies and may list the firm in its own record.
  • The certificate names scope, equipment and limitationsIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 6.1: type and scope of service, plus equipment types and maker names where limiting.
  • Renewal by audit at intervals not exceeding five yearsIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 6.2: three years for thickness measurement; societies may add intermediate audits.
  • Manufacturer certification is a precondition in some categoriesIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 5.1.1: maker evidence that the firm is licensed for those makes and models.
  • Approval is mandatory only where a surveyor relies on the resultIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 4.2: thickness measurement, in-water survey, ultrasonic tightness testing and RIT for class decisions.
  • Five categories are optional unless the flag says otherwiseIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 4.4: low-location lighting, PA/GA sound pressure, noise, coating testing, ro-ro door examination.
  • Statutory scopes depend on the society holding flag authorisationIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 4.3: the society may instead accept flag, RO or other flag-acceptable approvals.
  • Z17 does not replace flag authorisation under MSC.402(96)IACS UR Z17 · InternationalAnnex 1 section 13 implements it, but only for flags that authorised that society.
  • Z17 does not replace A.761(18) liferaft station approvalIACS UR Z17 · InternationalStation approval stays with the flag and the raft maker; the twelve-month interval is SOLAS III/20.8.
  • Z17 is not calibration or inspection-body accreditationIACS UR Z17 · InternationalIt confers no ISO/IEC 17025 or 17020 scope, and no MED wheelmark product conformity. The ILAC and EMSA MED rows below are where those are verified.
  • An approval does not transfer between societiesIACS UR Z17 · InternationalEach society approves separately; Z17 8.1 lets a cancelling society inform the other IACS members.
  • Agents, subsidiaries and subcontractors must be declaredIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 section 3 and 5.1.1: listed in the application and bound by formal contract.
  • The society remains accountable to the flag for the firm's workIACS UR Z17 · InternationalZ17 4.1.3: third-party work counts as the society's work under RO Code MSC.349(92).
