Surveys & Certification Support

Preparation, attendance and close-out on the inspections your vessel is judged by: class annual, intermediate, renewal and docking surveys; flag State inspections; Port State Control, pre-arrival readiness to detention release support; external ISM, ISPS and MLC verifications; SIRE 2.0 and CDI vetting. Our own work: internal ISM audits, BWMS commissioning testing to BWM.2/Circ.70/Rev.1 in the scope stated in the quotation, EU MRV and IMO DCS data prepared for the accredited verifier, and condition, draught, bunker, cargo and damage surveys. You receive a dated report, the evidence and the next due date.

Class survey attendance

The instruments that govern this work, cited as a superintendent would write them. What each one requires of the shipowner — not what we sell.

SOLAS Ch. IInternational Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, as amended — Chapter I, General Provisions

Statutory surveys are carried out by the Administration or a recognised organisation (Reg. I/6). Cargo ship certificates run five years at most, a Passenger Ship Safety Certificate 12 months (Reg. I/14). Condition is maintained between surveys (Reg. I/11).

Recommendatory guidance adopted 3 December 2025, revoking A.1186(33). It sets out what a surveyor examines and tests at each initial, annual, intermediate, periodical and renewal survey. The intervals are set by the conventions.

ISM CodeInternational Safety Management Code (SOLAS Ch. IX)

Applies to passenger ships, and to cargo ships and MODUs of 500 GT and over (SOLAS IX/2). Internal safety audits at intervals not exceeding twelve months (12.1). DOC verified annually (13.4); SMC verified at least once intermediately (13.8).

ISPS CodeInternational Ship and Port Facility Security Code (SOLAS Ch. XI-2)

Passenger ships, cargo ships of 500 GT and over, and MODUs, on international voyages (SOLAS XI-2/2). The ship holds an approved security plan; the ISSC is verified initially, at least once intermediately, and renewed within five years (Part A/19.1.1).

MLC, 2006Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended

Ships of 500 GT and over on international voyages, or operating from or between ports in another country, carry a Maritime Labour Certificate and a DMLC (Reg. 5.1.3), valid five years, with an intermediate inspection (Standard A5.1.3).

BWM.2/Circ.70/Rev.1Guidance for the commissioning testing of ballast water management systems

A newly installed system is commissioning tested for correct installation and operation, with representative sampling and indicative analysis of the treated discharge. MEPC.325(75), in force 1 June 2022, replaced BWM regulations E-1.1.1 and E-1.1.5: the initial survey, or the additional survey where the system is fitted to a ship in service, must confirm the test has been carried out.

What you receive

  • Preparation checklist against the governing instrument, then the attendance report with the findings list — every document in English, dated and signed, as a PDF within five working days of the team leaving the vessel, and within 24 hours where the vessel sails before then or a certificate expires before then, provided you tell us at the order that the date is tight. Where a finding needs a decision from you before it can be closed, the report and the findings list still go out on that clock and the closure evidence follows the re-inspection. Copies and reissues come from docs@shipcertify.com.
  • Conditions of class and recommendations register: each item in the surveyor's own wording, the closure evidence, the surveyor who cleared it and the date
  • Deficiency rectification record against each deficiency code and action code on the PSC inspection report (Form B), with dated photographic evidence
  • Internal audit report: non-conformities, observations, corrective actions and closure
  • BWMS commissioning test report to BWM.2/Circ.70/Rev.1, with the indicative analysis results from the testing body named in the quotation
  • Condition, on-hire/off-hire, draught or bunker survey report with photographs and figures
  • Certificate and survey status schedule listing, for every item, the anniversary date, the next survey window and the expiry
  • Parts and consumables required by the work, where they can be supplied for that attendance, on the same quotation and invoice

Questions we are actually asked

Are you approved by my flag Administration?

We do not publish approval claims, and this page will not answer for your flag — an approval is checked on the granting authority's register, not on a supplier's website. Send the flag, the vessel and the scope. The quotation then sets it out item by item: what we carry out, what requires an authorisation for that flag and who must hold it, and what documentation is supplied in writing with the quotation for each. You verify anything supplied on the granting authority's own register — the Administration's published list, the accreditation body's schedule, or the classification society's.

The vessel is alongside for eighteen hours. Can it be done in the port stay?

Send the ETA and ETD. They set the attendance window we quote against, and the reply states what fits and what does not. We work 24/7 across the ports we cover, attending from the nearest of six bases — Istanbul, Izmir, Iskenderun, Varna, Constanta, London — or through the partner network where that is the faster route to the ship. Will class or the PSC officer accept your paperwork?

A statutory certificate is issued by the flag Administration or its recognised organisation, not by a contractor. What you get from us is a report, a test record and a rectification evidence pack. The attending surveyor or PSC officer judges those on their content: instrument cited, method, readings, date, signature. Where a scope needs a specific authorisation to be accepted, the quotation says so before the job starts.

What happens if you find something that fails?

It goes in the report as found, with the instrument it fails against and the date. Nothing is closed quietly. Where the part is one we can supply and fit inside the same attendance, the quotation covers it. Where it is not, you get the defect, the options, and what each does to the certificate. The report to the Administration under SOLAS Reg. I/11(c) remains the master's or owner's.

We are detained. What can you actually do about it?

The work is bounded: attend, rectify what can be rectified in port, produce the evidence pack per deficiency code, attend the re-inspection. The release decision belongs to the port State, and the ISM corrective action to the Company. We do not negotiate on your behalf.

Who carries out the BWMS commissioning test, you or class?

Not class. The test is required at the survey associated with the installation, under BWM Convention regulation E-1 as amended by MEPC.325(75), and follows BWM.2/Circ.70/Rev.1: representative sampling and indicative analysis of the treated discharge. The scope we perform is set out in the quotation, and it names the independent testing body where one is required. The attending surveyor witnesses; the flag or its recognised organisation endorses the certificate.

Makes and types we service

The equipment actually found on ships, indexed by category, with the corporate history a superintendent needs — a plate still says Norsafe, Schat-Harding, Germanischer Lloyd. This is what the work covers. It is not a list of approvals: maker authorisation is granted per make and per type, and ours is supplied in writing with a quotation.
