Instrument Calibration

ShipCertify calibrates shipboard measuring instruments against reference standards that carry their own calibration certificates, and issues a calibration certificate for each instrument naming the standard used and its certificate reference. We do not publish our own accreditation status on a marketing page; what is held for a quoted scope is stated in writing with the quotation. Pressure and temperature instruments, gas detection, tank gauging, loading computers, oil content meters and flow measurement. Work is done on board during the port call where the method allows it. Every certificate carries as-found and as-left values, the calibration points and the reference standard used.

What we do

Pressure and temperature

  • Pressure gauges, vacuum gauges and manometers — multi-point calibration across the working range
  • Pressure transmitters and transducers — output verified against a traceable reference, loop included
  • Thermometers, thermocouples and RTDs — comparison calibration at the points the instrument is used

Cargo, tank and pollution prevention

How the work runs

  • Calibration on board during the port stay, or at a base where the method requires it
  • As-found and as-left values recorded at every point, adjustment noted between them
  • Measurement uncertainty stated, with the reference standard and its certificate identified
  • Out-of-tolerance instruments tagged, quarantined and reported before the team leaves the vessel
  • Replacement sensors, cells and instruments can be supplied with the attendance — send makes and types so parts travel with the team

SOLAS Reg. XI-1/7Atmosphere testing instrument for enclosed spaces

Ships carry an appropriate portable atmosphere testing instrument or instruments, capable as a minimum of measuring oxygen, flammable gases or vapours, hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide, before enclosed space entry. Suitable means shall be provided for the calibration of all such instruments.

Para. 7.2: the atmosphere is tested before any person enters and at regular intervals thereafter, with properly calibrated equipment, by persons trained in its use, manufacturers' instructions strictly followed. Para. 7.3: at least two sets of gas detection equipment, taking MSC.1/Circ.1477 into account. Para. 7.4 adds a carbon dioxide reading below 0.5% by volume. It replaces IMO Res. A.1050(27), which the 34th Assembly revoked in December 2025.

MARPOL Annex I, Regs. 14 and 31Oil filtering equipment; Oil discharge monitoring and control system

On ships of 400 gross tonnage and above, machinery-space bilge water passes through oil filtering equipment limiting the effluent to 15 ppm. On ships of 10,000 gross tonnage and above the equipment additionally carries alarm arrangements and an automatic stopping device. Oil tankers of 150 gross tonnage and above carry an approved oil discharge monitoring and control system.

IMO Res. MEPC.107(49), as amended by MEPC.285(70)Revised Guidelines and Specifications for Pollution Prevention Equipment for Machinery Space Bilges of Ships

Sets the specification and type-approval basis for 15 ppm oil filtering equipment and the 15 ppm bilge alarm. Under para. 4.2.11 as replaced by MEPC.285(70): the validity of calibration certificates is checked at IOPP annual, intermediate and renewal surveys; the accuracy of the alarm is checked by calibration and testing conducted by a manufacturer or persons authorised by the manufacturer, at intervals not exceeding five years after commissioning or within the term in the manufacturer's instructions, whichever is shorter; alternatively the unit is replaced by a calibrated 15 ppm bilge alarm, and the calibration certificate is retained on board.

ISM Code s.10 (mandatory under SOLAS Ch. IX)International Safety Management Code

Section 10 requires the company to establish procedures ensuring the ship is maintained in conformity with the relevant rules and regulations and with any additional requirements the company establishes, with inspections held at appropriate intervals, and to identify equipment and technical systems whose sudden operational failure may result in hazardous situations. Most instrument intervals come from here.

ISO/IEC 17025:2017General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories

Requires nothing of the shipowner. It binds laboratories: metrological traceability, a calibration programme for their own reference equipment, stated measurement uncertainty, defined certificate content. Accreditation to it is granted by a national accreditation body against a published scope that names the quantities, the ranges and the measurement capability covered, and it is that body's register — not a supplier's website — that settles who holds what. It is listed here because your surveyor may ask about it, not as a statement about us: we do not publish our own accreditation status on a marketing page. Whatever is held for a quoted scope is stated in writing with the quotation.

Intervals

What is due, how often, and which instrument sets the period. Where an interval comes from the manufacturer or from class rather than from an IMO instrument, the table says so.

Questions we are actually asked

Are you approved for my flag?

Ask, and you get a straight answer in writing — including "no". We do not publish authorisation scopes on a marketing page, and we never publish a certificate: a scan on a supplier's own site proves only that the supplier owns an image editor. Send the flag, the class and the scope. The quotation answers for that job — where an authorisation is held, the granting entity, the scope and the reference, checkable by you on that authority's public register; where one is not held, we say so, and what we would do instead.

Can you do this inside my port stay — and what has to go ashore?

Most of this scope is calibrated in place: gas detectors, pressure and temperature instruments, tank gauging, loading computers. Teams attend from the nearest of six bases — Istanbul, Izmir, Iskenderun, Varna, Constanta and London — and the 24/7 line covers every port on the index. Some work is better done at a base, where an instrument needs a stable environment or a longer soak. Send the ETA, the ETD and the instrument list; you get back what fits the window and what does not, before the vessel arrives. If an instrument must go ashore and the window is too short to return it, the choice is a replacement supplied with the attendance or return at a later port — agreed before it leaves the ship.

Will class or PSC accept your calibration certificate?

Acceptance is decided by the attending surveyor or PSC officer, not by us, and it turns on two things. The first is what is on the certificate: the instrument identified by serial number, the reference standard named with its own certificate reference, the calibration points, as-found and as-left values, uncertainty, date and the technician. Ours carry all of that. The second is who is permitted to do the work, because for some items the regulation names the party and no paperwork substitutes for it — the 15 ppm bilge alarm accuracy check is reserved to the manufacturer or persons it authorises (MEPC.107(49) para. 4.2.11), and ODME seal replacement and reset after permanent repair to the manufacturer or his agent (MEPC.108(49) para. 5.2). Send the flag, the class and the scope with the enquiry; the quotation says in writing which of these we cover and which we do not, before you award the job.

What happens if you find an instrument that fails?

The instrument is tagged as out of tolerance, quarantined from service and reported to you before the team leaves the vessel. Where the fault is a sensor, a cell or a seal, send the make and type with the attendance request and the part can travel with the team; found on the day, it is sourced against your order rather than promised from stock. Where an instrument cannot be brought back into tolerance, you get that in writing, so it is replaced before the survey rather than at it.

How often does a gas detector actually have to be calibrated?

SOLAS Reg. XI-1/7 requires the instrument and requires that suitable means for its calibration be provided. It sets no interval. IMO Res. MSC.581(110), adopted 27 June 2025, recommends testing with properly calibrated equipment and that the manufacturers' instructions be strictly followed — again, no interval. The interval comes from the manufacturer's instructions and the vessel's planned maintenance system under the ISM Code; published schedules for the four-gas instruments in common shipboard use fall between six and twelve months. Send the make and model and we tell you which applies before the attendance. A bump test is not a calibration: it proves the sensor responds, not that the reading is correct.

A SIRE 2.0 or CDI inspection is coming. What in this scope gets looked at?

The portable gas detection kit and its certificates, the UTI tapes, fixed detection on deck and in the pump room, cargo tank high-level and overfill alarms, the inert gas system oxygen analysers, the 15 ppm bilge alarm and the ODME. An inspector checks that the certificate is current, that it identifies the instrument by serial number, and that the label on the instrument agrees with the certificate. Send the vetting date and the list is worked in that order.

Makes and types we service

The equipment actually found on ships, indexed by category, with the corporate history a superintendent needs — a plate still says Norsafe, Schat-Harding, Germanischer Lloyd. This is what the work covers. It is not a list of approvals: maker authorisation is granted per make and per type, and ours is supplied in writing with a quotation.
