Brittany Ferries Reports Up To 6% Fuel Savings With Digital Twin Routing

Brittany Ferries has demonstrated substantial fuel consumption reductions, reportedly up to 6%, through the implementation of a digital twin-enhanced routing system. This technology, developed in conjunction with Adrena and Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine Offshore, has undergone extensive testing over thousands of commercial voyages and was monitored for nearly two years on the E-Flexer class vessel, Galicia.

The core of this advancement lies in creating a virtual replica, or digital twin, of the vessel and its operating environment. This allows for sophisticated simulations and real-time analysis of various routing options, taking into account factors such as weather, sea conditions, and vessel performance characteristics. By optimising routes based on these dynamic inputs, the system aims to minimise fuel burn and associated emissions.

For vessel operators, particularly those managing fleets trading within the European, UK, Mediterranean, Turkish, Black Sea, or Middle Eastern regions, this development highlights the growing impact of advanced digital solutions on operational efficiency. The ability to predict and mitigate fuel consumption through intelligent routing can directly translate into cost savings and contribute to meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations, such as the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).

A practical takeaway for technical superintendents and fleet managers is the potential for such systems to provide data-driven insights for route planning and vessel performance monitoring. While the specific technology is proprietary, the principle of leveraging detailed vessel data and advanced analytics for optimisation is becoming a key differentiator in efficient fleet management. This can inform decisions regarding voyage planning, speed optimisation, and potentially even vessel design considerations for future newbuildings.
