GTT Unveils Next-Gen 2 barg LNG Fuel Solution for Container Ships
GTT has introduced a new generation of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel containment system specifically designed for container vessels. This latest offering features a 2 barg operating pressure, a notable increase from previous technologies, and a standardised cubic geometry.
The primary aim of this development is to streamline the integration of LNG fuel tanks into container ship designs. By standardising the tank's form, GTT intends to reduce the time shipyards spend on design and construction phases. This efficiency gain is expected to translate into improved overall vessel economics for operators, particularly through maximising available cargo space.
Furthermore, the enhanced operational pressure of 2 barg contributes to improved performance. The system's membrane containment technology is engineered for greater efficiency during operation. Approvals in Principle (AiPs) have been secured from classification societies, signalling initial acceptance of the technology.
For operators trading to European, UK, Mediterranean, Turkish, Black Sea, or Middle Eastern ports, this development is significant. As these regions increasingly implement stricter environmental regulations and promote the adoption of alternative fuels, the availability of more efficient and easier-to-integrate LNG fuel solutions becomes crucial. The potential for improved vessel economics and reduced integration complexity can assist fleet managers in meeting decarbonisation targets and navigating the evolving regulatory landscape in these key trading areas.
A practical takeaway for vessel operators considering LNG as a fuel is the potential for faster retrofits or newbuilding integration due to the standardised design. This could lead to quicker deployment of LNG-powered vessels and a more predictable project timeline.
