Hanwha Ocean Secures ABS AiP for LNG-Ammonia Dual-Fuel System

Hanwha Ocean has achieved an Approval in Principle (AiP) from ABS for a novel fuel system designed to allow existing LNG carriers to transition to ammonia as a fuel. This development is significant as it proposes a pathway for vessels to adopt a lower-emission fuel without necessitating a complete overhaul of their existing fuel tanks or supply infrastructure.
The system reportedly features a multi-purpose fuel tank and an integrated fuel gas supply arrangement, aiming to streamline the conversion process. The AiP, presented at Gastech 2026, signifies a crucial step towards validating the technical feasibility of such a dual-fuel capability.
Operational Implications
For vessel operators, particularly those managing fleets trading in the specified regions, this technology could represent a more cost-effective and less disruptive route to decarbonisation. The ability to retrofit existing LNG carriers for ammonia use, rather than requiring entirely new builds or extensive structural changes, addresses a key barrier to fuel transition. This could accelerate the adoption of ammonia, a fuel with zero carbon emissions at the point of combustion, as a viable alternative to traditional fuels.
Regional Impact
Operators trading to European, UK, Mediterranean, Turkish, Black Sea, or Middle Eastern ports will find this development particularly relevant. These regions are at the forefront of implementing stricter environmental regulations and are actively exploring alternative fuels. The availability of such a conversion system could facilitate compliance with upcoming emissions targets and provide a competitive advantage for vessels capable of bunkering and utilising ammonia in these key trading areas. It aligns with the growing demand for greener shipping solutions within these environmentally conscious maritime hubs.
