Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd Reroute Services Back Through Suez Canal

Two of the world's largest container shipping lines, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, are increasing their use of the Suez Canal, bringing four services back to this shorter route between Asia and Europe. This decision indicates a calculated assessment of the prevailing risks in the Red Sea, suggesting that the perceived threat has diminished sufficiently to warrant the return to a more direct passage. The specific services affected are AE5, AE11, AE12, and ME2, which will now transit the canal instead of continuing their voyages around the Cape of Good Hope.

For vessel operators, this development has several implications. The primary benefit of returning to the Suez Canal is a significant reduction in transit times and, consequently, voyage costs. This can lead to improved schedule reliability and potentially free up vessel capacity, which is crucial in the current charter market. However, the underlying security situation in the Red Sea remains a factor, and operators must continue to monitor intelligence and adhere to any security advisories. The decision by these major carriers suggests a trend towards normalisation, but the potential for renewed disruption cannot be entirely discounted.

Operators trading to European, UK, Mediterranean, Turkish, Black Sea, or Middle Eastern ports will likely see increased vessel calls and potentially more predictable schedules from these services. This could alleviate some of the logistical pressures experienced recently, though it also means a greater concentration of traffic through a vital chokepoint. The shift back to Suez also has implications for bunker fuel consumption, as shorter routes generally translate to lower fuel burn compared to circumnavigating Africa.
