New Oil Spill Remediation Formulants Developed with Alkagesta Backing

A collaborative initiative, Clean Caspian, has advanced its research into oil spill response with the identification of two novel formulants. Backed by commodities trader Alkagesta, the project has completed initial laboratory testing, pinpointing specific chemical agents designed to tackle oil pollution.

One formulant, designated Oil-Collecting Reagent 1, is engineered for the containment of spills, aiming to prevent their spread and facilitate recovery. The second, Flocculant-Coagulant 1, is intended for the dispersion of oil slicks, breaking them down into smaller particles for more manageable environmental processing.

This development is significant for vessel operators as it introduces potentially more effective tools for mitigating the environmental impact of hydrocarbon releases. While the specifics of deployment and efficacy in real-world scenarios require further validation, the identification of targeted formulants represents a step forward in spill response technology.

For operators trading within European, UK, Mediterranean, Turkish, Black Sea, or Middle Eastern waters, the availability of improved spill response agents could translate to more efficient and less disruptive incident management. Ports in these regions often have stringent environmental regulations, and advanced remediation capabilities can be crucial in minimising penalties and operational downtime following an incident.

The research was led by Aynura Mammadov from the University of Padova and Narmin Ismayilova of Baku Engineering University. Mammadova noted, "For us, Clean []". The Clean Caspian startup project was established this year.
